Love Mercy, Do Justice December 2022 Scripture Reflection
“He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?.” Micah 6:8
Over the past four months, the leadership team of Love Mercy, Do Justice (LMDJ) has shared passages of scripture that were impactful for them in this journey we’ve undertaken to love mercy and do justice together.
Of course, scripture can and has been applied to almost everything under the sun. The internet and search engines have made that particularly easy. Google “Bible verse about…” and select any letter of the alphabet to see a myriad of suggested topics. ( I just typed that with “z” and the second suggestion was “Bible verses about zombies” – and there were over 300,000 results! What a world.)
It is for that reason that these Scripture Reflections are not meant to be picking out verses to prove a point, rather they are an attempt to share the powerful ways that we have been learning from scripture lately.
In Micah 6, the Lord is bringing a charge against Israel, for they have not done what was asked of them. He has told them what is good and what He requires of them. And yet, this list of three simple, loving and beautiful instructions has proven again and again to be so challenging for us humans to live by.
Do justice. Love mercy. Walk humbly with God.
It is our hope as the LMDJ team to live out this call. Knowing we are likely making mistakes along the way, we continue to walk humbly with God. Recognizing that we have received great mercy ourselves, we know we must extend it in love towards others. And we must not neglect to do justice, which often means learning from and standing up for people in our world that those in power rarely see or listen to.
As the Spirit moves, we invite you to join us along the way.
