MESSAGE NOTES AND INDIVIDUAL/GROUP REFLECTION QUESTIONS, 10/13/24

So, what do you believe about Jesus? We all believe something about Him. A.W. Tozer, a famous American pastor in the mid 1900s declared, “What comes into our minds when we think about Jesus is the most important thing about us.”

In week 9, we focus on John 9 and consider this question of belief: Do you believe Jesus gives spiritual sight?

CONNECT

  1. When have you ever not been able to see clearly? What did you miss out on? How was this challenging and how do you rectify the situation?

REFLECT

  1. Read John 9:1-12. Put yourself in the different characters in this story (disciples, Jesus, blind man, his neighbors). Reflect on how you would feel (glad, mad, sad, scared, shame, shock) and what you might say if you were that person.

  2. Reflect on John 9:3-5. What does Jesus’ statement reveal about God’s creation, His purpose, suffering, sin and Jesus being the light of the world?

  3. Read John 9:13-23. Why do you think condemnation and fear are the main tactics used by the Pharisees in their investigation? How do you see this in modern day relationships (home, church, community, politics, etc.)? How might curiosity and kindness have been applied to this situation?

  1. Read John 9:24-34 What is exasperating and glorious about this heated debate between the Pharisees and the man born blind? What does it make you want to say to the Pharisees or the man born blind?

  1. Read John 9:35-41. What does the progression of the blind man’s faith (from seeing Jesus as a prophet to recognizing Him as Lord and God) and the lack of faith of the Pharisee teach you about how spiritual growth happens or is limited?

APPLICATION

Ponder – In what ways might you be spiritually blind, like the Pharisees who refused to acknowledge the work and person of Jesus in this given situation? How might humility and curiosity help you? Where is this needed in your life?

Pray – Jesus, open the eyes of my heart to see your way(s).
