MESSAGE NOTES, 7/6/25

Following Jesus isn’t just about Sunday mornings or spiritual moments—it’s about surrendering your whole life to Him.

This series explores how every area of our ordinary lives—resources, relationships, health, and careers—is meant to be lived fully with and for God’s glory.

This week, we focus on how to partner with God as we steward our calling/career at the “work” we do as an employee, student or retiree.

CONNECT

  1. Besides at home, calculate where you spend the most time in a given week.

REFLECTION

  1. Read Colossians 3:22-4:1. The Christian view of work in these verses is that God is ultimately our master (boss) and all work is to be done for Him and with Him. When was the first time you became aware of this truth?  What is the contrasting view of work that most people have?
  2. Read Colossians 4:2-4. Why is prayer an important part of living a life of influence in your calling/career as an employee, student, or retiree? Do you see yourself as a messenger of Christ in your role? Why or why not? What are the unique challenges and opportunities of being Christ’s messenger in your current “work” as an employee, student, or retiree?
  3. Read Colossians 4:5. What does it look like to “conduct yourself with wisdom toward outsiders” as you “work”? What message do you think people at your “work” are receiving from the way you live your life? What can you do to be more prepared to influence others in your “work”?
  4. Read Colossians 4:6. How can the way we talk at our “work” reflect the grace of God to others? In what ways can our words distort the grace of God? What does it mean to have our words be “seasoned with salt”? What kinds of things can we say and do that will make people want to taste more of God? What kinds of things can we say or do that kill others’ appetite for God?
  5. What can you do and say to show people in your “work” as an employee, student, or retiree how much God loves them?

TAKE ACTION

  • What next step is God calling you to take?
  • How can humility help you (see below)?

DON’T FORGET – HUMILITY IS KEY

Humility means openly acknowledging our need for God’s involvement in our work life.
Humility is the key to working with people and succeeding in our work.
Our prayer life is a reflection of our humility before God.
Humility allows us to understand circumstances and people so we know what to do.
Humility produces respect for people so we value them as God does.
Humility allows us to act justly and fairly in the way we deal with people.
Humility produces wisdom and courage to deal with difficult people (even enemies).
