MESSAGE NOTES AND INDIVIDUAL/GROUP REFLECTION QUESTIONS, 6/2/24

During this season of Pentecost, our three-week message series looks at the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, who tends to get overlooked in our churches and personal lives. Drawing on what the Bible says regarding the person and work of the Holy Spirit, you will be encouraged to know the third person of the Trinity better.

This week, we conclude our series by  focusing on what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

  1. Read Acts 2:1-4. It describes the disciples being filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. How does this event shape your understanding of what it means to be ‘filled with the Holy Spirit’?  How have you experienced a similar moment of spiritual empowerment or heard of this happening?
  2. Reflect on the controversy around speaking in tongues. How do you view the role of speaking in tongues in a Spirit-filled life? Have you ever felt pressure to exhibit certain spiritual gifts? What new perspective on speaking in tongues did the message give you?
  3. How does the image of being drunk help expand your understanding of what a Spirit-filled life is like? Ephesians 5:15-18 contrasts being drunk with wine and being filled with the Spirit. What are the benefits in your life when you are “under the influence” of the Holy Spirit more consistently?
  4. The message emphasized the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) as some of the best evidence of a Spirit-filled life. Do you believe this to be true? What other evidence is there for living a Spirit-filled life?
  5. Considering Galatians 5:16-17,  what are some ways you struggle with the conflict between your sinful nature and living by the Spirit? How do you want the Spirit to change the way you think, speak, and act?
  6. Read Galatians 5:25.  How can you become more yielded to the Holy Spirit in your daily life? And as you take your next steps towards a Spirit-filled life, what questions do you still have that you want to seek out answers to?

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Help me to follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of my life. In this season, I need you to come alongside me in _______________.

Show me the way, grant me perspective and mold me. May You receive the glory. Amen.
