Advent Devotion, 11/28/22
JOHN 1:1-5
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
As John begins his gospel, he starts by calling Jesus the Word. Not the word as a unit of speech, but the Word, our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He was there at the beginning of the world because he has always existed as part of the Trinity – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit. If you are like me, you might be tempted to forget this and instead, think that his virgin birth was his beginning. We would be wrong: Jesus has always been with us, just not always in human form. When I try to grasp that the Creator of the world chose to come to us on earth as a small, helpless baby, I am amazed all over again! The greatness of God’s being is too big for me to comprehend and that is just it; he is bigger than we think. I was recently reminded of this on a Sunday morning when we sang “Bigger Than I Thought” (Songwriters Natalie Sims, Sean Curran, and Allen Swoope):
My doubts and fears don’t scare You
You’re bigger than I thought You were
You’re bigger than I thought
I stop all negotiations
With the God of all creation
REFLECT
Although we will never be able to fully comprehend how big God is, how can you focus on his greatness today? How has he helped to put your doubts and fears to rest because of his great love for you – love that has always existed and always will?
PRAY
Lord Jesus, thank you that you have always existed and always will. During this Advent season, help me to grow in my understanding of your greatness and may I find rest in your unending love. Amen.
