Advent Devotion, 12/19/22

ISAIAH 7:10-16
10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11 “Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.” 12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.” 13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. 15 He will be eating curds and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16 for before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.

Signs! Everywhere we look we see them. Telling us what to do, where to go, and how to get there. Still, when it comes to our lives we are still looking for signs. What to do? Is it right or wrong? What’s going to happen to our Nation? In Isaiah, Ahaz saw his kingdom in shambles, much like our world today. When God told him to ask him for a sign, like most of us, Ahaz refused to test his lord. I know I was taught that, too. However, God told him that He would send him a sign, a virgin would give birth and she would name him Immanuel, God is With Us! God gave us the ultimate sign that whatever is happening in our lives that God is With Us. During this Advent season, we need to remember this.

REFLECT
Consider how God has been with you in your life. Have there been signs that he has given you? Have you listened?

PRAY
Jesus, Immanuel, help me to remember that you have promised to be with me. You are the Light that the world needs to find. When we are troubled, calm our souls and light our path. Show us the signs of what to do, where to go, and how to get there. Amen!
