MESSAGE NOTES AND INDIVIDUAL/GROUP REFLECTION QUESTIONS, 11/10/24

So, what do you believe about Jesus? We all believe something about Him. A.W. Tozer, a famous American pastor in the mid 1900s declared, What comes into our minds when we think about Jesus is the most important thing about us.”

In week 13, we focus on John 13 and consider this question of belief:

Do you believe Jesus’ command to serve and love one another?

CONNECT

  1. Who has served and loved you well in your life?

REFLECT

  1. Read John 13:1-17. The scene is the Last Supper. Within the upcoming days, Jesus will be arrested, crucified, entombed, yet rise again. Review v. 3 and wrestle with what was Jesus’ motive to serve His disciples based on what He knew. How did Jesus break with social hierarchy and why is this significant? How does Philippians 2:2-8 reflect the beauty and fullness of Jesus’ actions? What is Jesus wanting them to understand? Why do they and we not get it?
  1. Read John 13:18-30. What questions rise up in you with regards to what Jesus is saying? Note the prophecy being fulfilled in v. 18. What lie(s) did Judas believe that led Him to carry out His betrayal? How would you define what it means to betray Jesus in our world today?
  1. Read John 13:31-38. Chapters 1-12 of John are often called the Book of Signs for they tell of the many miracles Jesus performed in hope that others would believe. Chapters 13-21 are referred to as the Book of Glory for they describe Jesus’ journey of death and resurrection as a means of glorifying both himself and the Father. How are Jesus and God glorified in His death and resurrection? And why was a new command needed?
  1. How do you see Jesus’ final question to a confused Peter (v.38) relating to all that has been declared in John 13 by Jesus?

APPLICATION

Take a moment to review this chapter and your thoughts. Make a declaration verbally or on paper regarding what Jesus’ words are saying or calling you to.

PRAYER:

Jesus, help me to serve and love like you.
