"Pilate On The Beach"
A story presentation of the trial and death of Jesus
Communion to follow the presentation
"Pilate On The Beach" is a one-act, dramatic play focusing on Pontius Pilate. Aside from Biblical accounts, little is actually known about the Roman prefect who condemned Jesus. Even so, this play envisions what life could have been like for this man following his encounters with Jesus.
The play moves back and forth between present and past events of Pilate's life, capturing the emotional depth of the story of Jesus' trial and death on the cross from what one could envision as Pilate's viewpoint.
As the play opens, we find the exiled Roman governor walking along the seashore of the Island of Lypos. It is rumored among the island residents that the banished Pilate has gone completely mad. Lydia, a young child, befriends the exiled and lonely Pilate . Even though the presence of Jesus never leaves him, Pilate is still haunted by voices of his past, including Caiaphas (the Jewish High priest), Gaius Caesar (Caligula), and Pilate's wife. In the end, it is Lydia's mother who attempts to help Pilate understand who Jesus was.
We feel the intensity of Pilate's emotional turmoil as he struggles with who Jesus was, and is. Finally in the last moments of the piece, Jesus comes once again to Pilate, and Pilate simply asks Jesus: 'What do I do with you?'
