Arvada Covenant Church - Outreach Opportunities

Outreach Opportunities

"I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers, you did for me."
     -Matthew 25:40 (NIV)

Arvada Covenant Church reaches out to our surrounding community in caring, creative and practical ways in order to demonstrate the love of Christ. Currently there are several on-going opportunities to serve the body of Christ. The commission also pledges to remain attune to the passions and new projects that the people of our church might champion.

9Health Fair

Since 1980, 9Health Fair has helped save thousands of lives in Colorado thanks to free and low-cost early detection and prevention health screening and educational services. The inclusive, community health fair serves people from all walks of life, income levels, and racial and ethnic backgrounds. Arvada Covenant Church first began participating with the 9Health Fair in 2005. As one Arvada's primary screening sites, 511 people received screenings on a variety of health tests last year. In 2006, the 9Health Fair will be expanded to include several additional screening tests, increasing the number of people who can be served and also increasing the need for volunteers. Both medical and non-medical volunteers are needed for this event.

Bonfils Blood Drive

For our surrounding community, the church operates a food-bank for needy individuals and families. Up to half a dozen families and individuals are served each week from this service. Donations of canned food are always appreciated.

Growing Home (IHN)

Though a unique partnership with churches and communities of faith, Interfaith Hospitality Network provides shelter, meals and support services to families experiencing homelessness in Arvada and the Greater Denver area. Four times a year, Arvada Covenant is the host church for the families in the IHN program. At the church, each family is provided with a private room for the week as well as breakfast and dinner each day. We are especially blessed to host these families during the week of Christmas. Last year, Arvada Covenant Church hosted 15 homeless families, including approximately 18 adults and 32 children over the course of four weeks. Each week requires the help of dedicated volunteers to cook, host the families during the evening and spend the night at the church.

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God's love. This program of Samaritan's Purse provides an opportunity for people of all ages to be involved in a simple, hands-on mission project while focusing on the true meaning of Christmas—Jesus Christ, God's greatest gift.

In 2005, Arvada Covenant set an ambitious goal to more than double our box collections from the previous year. At the end of the drive, 950 boxes had been collected! Boxes from the Denver-area typically go to Central and South America. In fact, when the Arvada Covenant Church Youth Group traveled to Peru in 2005, they had a personal encounter with the outpouring of love contained in an Operation Christmas Child shoe box. On the first day of their ministry, the group was asked to translate a letter written in English. This piece of paper had been folded and unfolded many times, yet was carefully handed over for translation. As the group examined the letter closely they realized it was part of the gift from an Operation Christmas Child box. The Peruvian child that had given the youth the letter was delighted to have the Spanish translation of the blessings and greetings sent to her from a generous believer in the United States.

Royal Family Kids Camp

Royal Family Kids' Camps Arvada; a non-profit, tax-deductible, all-volunteer, life changing summer camp experience targeted to Denver Metro foster families and children with shattered lives due to abuse and neglect. RFKC Arvada has been sponsored by Arvada Covenant Church for the last 16 years and is a unique cooperative venture among 10 Christian churches, local business and community leaders.

During 2008, over 150 local individuals and businesses will join together to volunteer, support, plan and raise funds to create a week long, unique, high quality camp experience. It is sensitively designed to meet the needs of children ages 7-11 without permanent families. During 2007, 79 adult volunteers invested a week at camp to care for, and have great fun with, 63 young campers with tattered lives from the Denver Metro area.

RFKC Arvada is affiliated with RFKC, Inc., the leading international non-profit which organizes a Christian summer camp experience for these boys and girls experiencing deep heartaches. In 2008, 159 RFKC camps in 36 states and 19 in 7 countries will impact over 6,000 young campers. For one week each summer RFKC-Arvada plans and creates a fun, inspirational and life-changing outdoor mountain experience with sensitive adults.

In many ways, this short-term outreach positively impacts the adults as much as the campers. Many of these children have never been to the mountains, or experienced activities like swimming, woodworking, chapel time, fishing and hiking. The campers benefit from the loving family atmosphere.

Save Our Youth

Save Our Youth needs Christian men and women to work with young boys and girls from the inner city. These youth are asking for help and are willing to receive from a caring, loving adult. If you're interested in finding out more about being a friend to an urban youth, call Trudy at (303) 455-1126 ext. 16.

Thanksgiving Dinner and Clothing Bank

For 23 years, Arvada Covenant Church has hosted a free Thanksgiving Dinner and Clothing Bank for members of the community. On average, nearly 500 people, including the homeless, elderly and those who might otherwise be alone on the holiday, enjoy a delicious turkey dinner, complete with all the trimmings. Guests in need can also receive clean, usable clothing from the Clothing Bank. Volunteers from ACC, literally numbering in the hundreds, choose to spend a portion of their holiday, and the weeks leading up to it, in service to others.
