The Line

Lines are powerful. They are used to divide space. They are used to distinguish boundaries. Lines represent a choice. Jesus created figurative lines to invite people to experience true life through Him. He separated the empty, duty filled, self-righteous life from the life of a Christ follower. Jesus illustrates a very real transformation that occurs when we embrace the way of life He makes possible. He is concerned about who we are not just what we do.

June 21st, 2015: The Line – Hindsight is 20-20

Matthew 23:29-39
Things are always much clearer in retrospect. We like to think that we wouldn’t make the same mistakes our predecessors made. That we are wiser, smarter, more spiritually attuned. Yet over and over again, history keeps repeating itself. Jesus is calling all of us to humility of heart, a willingness to consider His claims, and the wisdom to know what we do not know.

June 14th, 2015: The Line – The Heart of the Problem

Matthew 23:25-28
If we humans spent half the time on our insides as we spend on our outsides the world would be a far better place. Jesus doesn’t really care what the outside looks like, as long as the heart is captured by the Kingdom of God. At one point does our pursuit of vanity lead to our eventual insanity?

June 7th, 2015: The Line – You Can’t Out Give…

God is the most generous being that has ever or will ever exist. So why do we think He will be stingy with us? You can’t out give the Creator and generosity is the best way to live life. So give!

Scary Close

May 10, 2015 – Mothers Day: It’s A Family Affair

What happens when we can’t forgive ourselves? Both Peter and Judas failed miserably and were guilty of a horrible sin when they betrayed Jesus, but one of them found their way into the future, while the other did not. What was the difference? One found the ability to forgive himself even as Jesus had forgiven him, and the other did not. So often in this life, the biggest challenge isn’t believing that God forgives us, but in the willingness to forgive ourselves.

May 3, 2015: Walking With An Invisible God

Knowing and walking with an invisible God is not easy. Jesus calls us to “abide” in him but how do you do that when he cannot be seen or touched? What are the ways we can develop a friendship with God?

Friendships should be the most natural thing within the body of Christ, even though that is not always the case. Paul provides some great pointers about how to foster deeper relationships with those around you.

Moving Past The Pain

March 22, 2015: Not So Sweet Revenge

The desire to get back at those who hurt us is primal, powerful, and instinctive. Yet whenever we succumb to the voice of retaliation, the results are only further pain, cycles of violence, and unsatisfying closure. Don’t repay evil with evil, rather repay evil with good. Forgive, as you have been forgiven.

Pastor John

March 15, 2015: . . . As We Forgive Others

Jesus seems to link our forgiveness with the willingness to forgive others. But rather than making forgiveness seem conditional, Jesus targets the real change that happens in our hearts when the reality of forgiveness truly sinks in.

March 8, 2015: Arrested Development

Jesus’ ability to ask His father to forgive the people who were nailing Him to the cross is profound, but it is also deeply insightful. It not only revealed His incredibly gracious heart, but it also set a pattern of the role of forgiveness. People who are victims of trauma or abuse often get stuck, or fixate, at that state of emotional development. The ability to get ‘unstuck’ and move forward in life presumes the ability to face the pain and forgive the perpetrator. That is why we often say that forgiveness is as much for the victim as it is for the violator.

Happiness From Hope

March 1, 2015: Happiness from Hope: What Matters Most

The world can be incredibly dehumanizing; from the automated answering system to the honk from behind when a light just turned green, from the life of a child in a refugee camp to the a statistics that predict incarceration as more likely than graduation. The world is hard on humans and it has been from the beginning. Let’s join Jesus in bringing God’s kingdom to earth as it is in heaven.

February 15, 2015: Happiness From Hope: What Matters Most

We look at a few famous words from Paul where he expresses one of the biggest transformations in the human heart. Paul talks about the shift from all the things he used to value and what he has found matters most in his life.

February 8, 2015: Happiness From Hope – Who’s Following You?

Paul explains how everything he has ever done for this community of people is important to him. He starts reflecting on his “legacy” and the joy that he will have because of what this group of people is doing, no matter what happens to him.

February 1, 2015: Happiness From Hope: But What does it Matter

Paul is imprisoned, in chains, beaten up and is still able to rejoice in his situation. Philippians 1 undoes the notion that happiness is only based on the good times in our lives.

One of the greatest invitations of Christ is the offer of new life. However, there is a tension in a person that is created between old and new that at the core is about their will. The reality is that many people have good intentions to follow Jesus but never really want to let go of their will in exchange for what God’s will is.

In this series we will look at 4 areas of our life where we are prone to not fully embrace God’s will as a follower of Christ. And to be encouraged that if we pursued God’s will, our lives would be transformed.

Week 2: A Call To Action: One of the most compelling things about God throughout history has always been that He responded. He responded to brokenness and need with action. Many of us follow Jesus and attempt to make ourselves numb to the needs of people around us. Some of us are aware of the needs but don’t ever take action. In 1 John 3:17-18 followers of Jesus are invited to become people of ACTION. To show up in the brokenness and need of the world around them and offer compassion. This will be the most compelling thing we can do for our community.
